Two contrary lifestyles and characters form the core of the story of Narcissus and Goldmund. On the one hand there is the ascetic and deeply religious monastery student Narcissus (Sabin Tambrea), on the other hand the young, impetuous Goldmund (Jannis Niewöhner), who is brought to the medieval Mariabronn monastery by his father. Narcissus is committed to the strict rules of the monastery and the associated renunciation with every fiber of his heart, and Goldmund first tries to emulate him. A deep friendship quickly developed between the two so different boys. But Narcissus realizes that Goldmund has to take a different path: his impetuous, spirited and fun-loving friend is not made for the austere monastery life and he encourages him to leave the abbey. So Goldmund embarks on a restless journey. He experiences years of happiness, freedom and contentment, but also misery, war, death and the deadly plague epidemic. Many women cross his path until he finds his great love in Lene (Henriette Confurius). He also matures as an artist and finds fulfillment in one life. But then, under dramatic circumstances, the two meet again, which will put their friendship to the test!
